There once was a sailor who was in love with the moon. He spent most
all his days on his ship and every night he wished and hoped that the
sky would be clear and the waters calm so he could gaze at the moon.
Every night on those clear nights his dark eyes, as dark as the night
sky, would worship the moon and stare and stare until dawn. His
shipmates whispered amongst themselves, calling him a lonely man. But
he never thought of himself that way. He mourned the nights when only
the stars were shining, rejoicing when the moon returned to shine and
make the whites of his eyes whiter.
So in love with the moon was the sailor, he wished he were not a man.
Let me be a creature of the air, or a mountain, or a permanent
fixture in the sky like the stars, he would think. Only to be closer
to the moon so I may see the majestic beams of light more clearly,
nay let me be blinded by them.
One night the sailor went out alone on his little ship. His heart
ached more than ever for his beloved moon and he wondered if it was
all a dream. He considered drowning himself, but in his heart he knew
that even death could never take away his yearning for his moon love.
He looked out over the black water and up above and as sure as the
sun rises, there was his moon. "Come to me tonight."
As if in reply, the glowing orb disappeared behind a mist of gray
clouds. The sailor waited and waited, but it did not return.
Heartbroken, he started to turn away, but stopped as the clouds
parted and a ray of light shone down through.
"Tis my moonbeam." He whispered.
The light sparkled and twinkled becoming brighter and brighter until
it halted its journey down to hang before him like a cloud. The cloud
took the shape of a man, whose skin was moonlight, whose eyes were
stars, whose hair was the color of the sailor's eyes. The moon smiled
brilliantly and blinded the sailor. "I'm here, lover, to stay with
you."
"It's you, it really is!" He cried happily.
"I've watched over you many nights, Henry, and I'll do that now too,
but by your side from now on. I felt your love clear to the heavens.
I've come to you because I love you too."
Moonlight streamed through the sailor's hair, giving him a halo that
illuminated the look of joy on his dark handsome features. "Tell me
your name."
The moonbeam laughed. "I don't have one, but you may call me what you
like."
The sailor thought for only a second. "Chandler. I like Chandler."
"Very well."
The sailor kissed the moon and it was beyond his wildest fantasies.
Cool white kisses sweeter than any fruit he had ever tasted from the
many lands in his travels. "Chandler...sweet, sweet Chandler..."
The moon made love to him, filling his heart and body with pure
unstoppable white light, pouring into him, pounding him with the
tides of life. For Henry the very essence of life, of love was
moonlight.
Other sailors often wondered what happened to the moon, for it never
shone in the sky again, but one sailor knew.
